Describify is a Shopify plugin designed to generate product descriptions and social media content using AI. The tool integrates directly into the Shopify environment and follows Shopify’s Polaris design system.

Operating within Polaris introduced both clarity and constraint. The interface needed to feel native to Shopify while still delivering a differentiated AI-driven workflow. The challenge was designing within an established design system without creating friction or visual inconsistency.

The user base consisted primarily of merchants seeking faster content generation without sacrificing brand tone or product specificity.

Problem Framing

The core challenge was not simply generating text with AI, but giving users structured control over automation.

The problem became:

How can AI-generated content feel customizable and reliable rather than generic and unpredictable?

Merchants needed:

• Fast description generation
• Adjustable tone and attributes
• The ability to regenerate or refine outputs
• Clear control without complex configuration

The experience had to balance speed with trust.

Key Decisions

• Designed a central control area allowing users to adjust description attributes before generation, ensuring AI outputs felt guided rather than random.
  Tradeoff: Added a configuration step in exchange for higher-quality results.
• Structured the generation flow as a clear sequence: input → attribute selection → output → refinement.
  Tradeoff: Reduced immediacy slightly to improve clarity and predictability.
• Extended functionality beyond product descriptions to include AI-generated social media posts, increasing the plugin’s practical value for merchants.
• Strictly adhered to Shopify’s Polaris design system to ensure seamless ecosystem integration and reduce user friction.
• Designed clear feedback states during AI generation to manage user expectations around processing time.

Outcome & Impact

Describify streamlined content creation for Shopify merchants by reducing the time required to generate product descriptions and marketing copy. By combining AI automation with structured attribute controls, the plugin provided both efficiency and predictability.

The integration within Shopify’s Polaris system ensured familiarity and usability within the broader merchant workflow, minimizing adoption friction.

Reflection

This project reinforced the importance of designing AI tools that feel controllable and trustworthy. Automation alone is insufficient — users need visible structure and adjustable parameters to feel confident in AI-generated outputs.
